“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.”   –Frida Kahlo

In Depths

“I must be a mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.”   –Anaïs Nin

With all the rain lately I’ve been craving all things beach and ocean.
Let’s play mermaid, y’all!

Montpelier Center for Arts knows how to throw a lovely shindig! Last night’s celebration of art was simply lovely.

I had three landscapes in the show and they were painted together after I finished reading Great Expectations with my oldest son. We were also reading about “The Flying Dutchman” in preparation for Virginia Opera’s final show of the season. So between those two master works, inspiration came easily for these new pieces — marshes and maelstroms make for some fun daydreaming.

South-Atlantic Art Show

The Montpelier Center for Arts is hosting their Third Annual South-Atlantic Art Show juried by Jennifer Glave. It opens April 16 and runs through June 15, 2016. The show has some beautiful work and I’m happy to again be a part of this exhibition with three of my landscapes.

This art center is a cornerstone of country living in Hanover County, Virginia — it’s a beautiful historic building in the middle of horse country. The reception tomorrow evening is sure to be lovely — it’s a part of their 19th Annual Celebration of the Arts. If you find yourself in the area, you should check it out!

I’ll share more images once the show opens, but here’s a little peek of my landscapes:

Himmeli series

These paintings are from my new Himmeli series — inspiration comes from those beautifully simple, geometric, Finnish ornaments and mobiles (from the Germanic word himmel for sky, heaven). This obsession shall surely continue well into 2016.
